Our premier league side yesterday booked a spot in the semi-final of the Women's State Cup with a 3-0 win against the Hyundai Football West NTC Women.
The 2 teams met in a league clash last week and the Prems ran out 6-3 winners in that game, but any thoughts of a repeat scoreline were quickly banished, as the wet and slippery conditions on a poor surface at Celebration Park meant that both sides took a cautious approach in the first half.
The deadlock was broken by ex New Zealand international Renee Leota who volleyed home form cloase range after a shot from strike partner Sarah Carroll was blocked.
NTC made some changes for the 2nd half as they chased an equaliser, and the Redbacks defence was hard pressed to keep their young opponents at bay.
Some missed opportunities for the opposition proved to be costly, as midfielder Carla Bennett doubled the score by getting on the end of a free kick from Carroll.
Carroll then scored a penalty to seal the result, but there were still a few anxious moments towards the end and Young Matildas keeper Morgan Aquino had to be at her best to keep a clean sheet.
The Prems now play in their 11th consecutive semi-final and we wish them all the best as they aim to add to the clubs impressive record in the cup.
